I didn't expect to like this film as much as I did! When it comes to older movies, or at least American classics, I've found that it is sometimes hard to relate to the predicaments and values of the time, and the white-washing is pretty annoying.
Even though Marriage Italian Style is about 50 years old, it was hilarious, modern, and edgy! It is made apparent that Italian film was light-years ahead of American film in that era. The film deals with some heavy issues, as it is about a prostitute who falls in love with a rich business man and has an affair with him for most of her life and finally when she is older and fed up with being pushed around and used by him, she fakes a life-threatening illness to get him to marry her. The film mentions and deals with prostitution, abortion, infidelity, things like that. However, the drama is not overbearing. The heaviness is constantly tempered by the irony and comedy of it all. And Sophia Loren is just an awesome woman to watch in this. She's a gorgeous Amazonian beauty, but I had no idea she could actually act, too! [It's really not fair, if you ask me.] And very well, at that.
It's one of those timeless movies that will always be able to resonate with audiences. I only wish I knew Italian so I could fully appreciate the dialogue! As it was, the film was hilarious and Sophia Loren has great lines and comedic timing. Knowing Spanish helped me a bit in understanding some of the swearing and such.
