Luis Barragan

Infamous Mexican architect, or rather artist. I've never seen any of his structures in person but the pictures alone are AMAZING, which I think says something.
Even though he deals in simple uncomplicated planes and solid colors, there is still a sense of ambiguity created by the shadows and light that interact with his structures.
In some there is a flavor of mystery and sanctity--

In others, the temperature is more playful and alive--

Some call to mind the architecture of ancient civilizations--

Some of his works seem to act as merely a frame in order to highlight the subtle organic beauty in nature. Those elements that too often go overlooked like shadow, light, water, and greenery--

In contrast, his urban structures are much more imposing and have a very linear quality that very deliberately scream "man-made"--

In all of his works there is a common theme. They are not purely functional or aesthetic. They are emotional. They incite strong feelings about and within the space. To me Barragan is incredible for creating art for people to interact with and live in.
